Science and Applications of Ultrafast Ultraintense Lasers SAUUL (Consolider-Ingenio 2010)


The main goal of SAUUL project is to advance the Science and Applications of Ultrafast and Ultra-intense Lasers (SAUUL) in Spain, thereby positioning our country amongst the ten most technologically advanced countries in the world in this area of photonics. This project is funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación with a budget of 4.500.000€.



This project joins together most of the Spanish research groups with expertise in this area of scientific research. The participating groups benefit from SAUUL since they already develop and employ amplified femtosecond lasers in the sub-Terawatt regime in many different applications with the goal to increase pulse energy and decrease pulse duration. Moreover, each group largely benefits from SAUUL's synergetic effects since it integrates experts covering a broad range of research areas. In an international context, we strongly believe that SAUUL not only raises awareness of high-technology research but also helps to attract many new and young scientists to strengthen laser science and technology in Spain.


SAUUL also ensure a mutual benefit for the groups involved in laser science and its applications by favouring the birth of a network of laboratories around the projected Petawatt Laser Large Scale Facility to be established in Salamanca in 2010.


The objectives of SAUUL are divided into two main areas: (a) development of novel sources of ultrafast radiation with extreme characteristics, and (b) application of these laser sources in new areas of science and, in particular, in biophotonics and imaging technologies.
