Texture analysis using the one-dimensional Boolean model

We propose the use of some features derived from the discrete one-dimensional Boolean model to describe the texture contained in an image. First, the problem of characterising and classifying binary textures is studied. A similarity measure between one-dimensional Boolean models is defined and several classification criteria are presented.

 

Next, the work is extended to deal with grey level images. To do this, a grey image is considered as a set of binary planes, which can be obtained in different ways. Several classification criteria are also defined for the grey level case.

 

Then, we focus on the characterisation and classification of textures which are contained in areas of irregular shape. A systematic method to quantitatively measure the classification accuracy is introduced and applied to the proposed method.

 

Finally, our method is compared against three well-known methods for texture analysis, namely, the tree-structured wavelet transform, the sum and difference histograms, and the co-occurrence matrices. The results of the comparative study using a Brodatz-like texture database shown that our approach can perform better than the methods tested, although the best results were obtained when the whole sum and difference histograms were used to describe a texture at the expense of using a large number of features per image.
