This initiative, with an investment of 7,660 euros, is promoted by the Living Lab Planeta Debug of the UJI, co-financed by the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation in its Citizen Art program.

Mónica Rikić Fusté and Román Torre Sánchez have met with several people in charge of the Living Lab Planeta Debug –Emilio Sáez, Diego Díaz and Maria Josep Picó- in order to start the remote residency phase, due to the COVID-19 , and have shown interest in starting to collaborate with various research groups, including INAM’s Advanced Semiconductors (GAS), Ecophysiology and Biotechnology and Robotic Interaction and Systems (IRS Lab). ).

SCIENCE-ART COOPERATION AND TRANSFER

Professor Diego Díaz, researcher in the group Design and Contemporary Art: Trend, Innovation and Creativity (DACTIC) at the UJI, comments that in the meeting in digital format with Mónica Rikić Fusté and Román Torre Sánchez “the bases for to start the production of the two selected projects, especially, we have analyzed the needs of the artists to access the knowledge and studies of the scientific groups, also from a point of view of cooperation and transfer of mutual knowledge ».

These first residencies of artists at the UJI are “an opportunity of great interest to establish collaborations between artists, the research community and students, from which we hope that good ideas will emerge that can lead to future initiatives in the field of co-creation, sustainability and video games ”, argues Emilio Sáez, principal investigator of the Living Lab Planeta Debug as well as a member of the ITACA Group.

AN EXPERIMENTAL VIDEO GAME BASED ON A NAVAL BATTLE

The Posidoniade project Mónica Rikić will be an experimental video game based on a naval battle which emerges from the screen through a zenithal projection on a large surface covered with water. “It’s a textual adventure where players must complete a series of objectives to save or destroy the ocean, depending on their role in the game,” says the artist. Mónica Rikić (Barcelona, 1986) is an artist of new technologies. He focuses his practice on code, electronics and non-digital objects to create interactive projects often framed as experimental games. His interest lies in the social impact of technology, human-machine-human coexistence and the reappropriation of technological systems to rethink them through art. He has participated in international festivals such as Ars Electronica, Sónar + D and Japan Media Arts Festival.

HYBRID EXPERIENCE PLAYABLE DEVICE

Roman Torre explains that his idea for Last Chance was to “develop a playable device, halfway between the physical experience and the digital environment, which contemplates and works with the problems of the climate emergency and extreme climate changes. . For this reason, “look for inspiration in arcade-type slot machines, incorporating physical effects – water, temperature, etc. – with which to feel these changes urgently while the game is complete,” he adds. Torre (Asturias, 1978) has worked conceptualizing, realizing and collaborating in all types of artistic and technological productions of all measures, from small devices to artistic installations or medium-sized visual scenographies, to large visual productions in scene, such as dance performances and operas.
